Fishing in Washington in October: What’s in Season

Fisheries that are at their best in October. Best Times, Not Regulations.

Intro

Fishing in Washington in October is less about a single statewide pattern than a collection of fall opportunities. Coho are moving through marine waters and gathering near stream mouths. Chum activity is building toward a later fall peak, squid are following a progression through Puget Sound, and summer-run steelhead continue to hold in some rivers. Cooler weather can also improve the bite in lowland lakes.

What's in season

Coho salmon. Fall coho can be found in marine areas from the coast to South Puget Sound. Fish often stage near stream mouths before rain lifts flows and prompts them farther upstream. See Puget Sound salmon fishing and the salmon page for the larger picture.

Chum salmon. Also known as dog salmon, chum appear in lower streams during fall. October is a build-up period in Hood Canal, where the historical high point is November. Read the Hood Canal chum hub and salmon reference rather than treating every fall week as equivalent.

Squid. Night jigging at lit piers is a recognizable Puget Sound fall activity. The usual movement reaches the Edmonds waterfront around September, then continues toward Seattle, with Des Moines and Tacoma more associated with late November and December. Start with the Puget Sound squid guide and squid species page.

Steelhead. Summer-run steelhead may hold in rivers through fall, mainly east of the Cascades, with some western rivers in the picture. That differs from the Olympic Peninsula's later winter-run focus. Compare the Olympic Peninsula winter steelhead hub and steelhead species page, keeping the timing distinction clear.

By region

Puget Sound and San Juans: Coho movements are a principal fall consideration in marine waters. South Puget Sound adds resident coho and sea-run cutthroat, often appealing from fall through spring. Squid jigging becomes another option to investigate as activity shifts among waterfront areas.

Hood Canal: Chum begin building in October toward their historically stronger November showing. Focus research on shoreline access and the difference between watching fish gather in lower streams and making a fishing plan under current rules.

Olympic Peninsula and coast: Coho are part of the fall marine picture. Winter steelhead becomes a more timely subject as December approaches, but October's fall steelhead opportunities should not be confused with the later winter-run pattern.

Central and Eastern Washington: Summer-run steelhead holding in rivers and improving lowland-lake trout activity are useful subjects for October research. Cooler weather can bring a stronger trout bite, and hatchery stocking continues; current local information still matters.

Trip ideas

Marine coho outing. Explore guide listings that describe coho-focused trips and whether the experience is boat-based or shoreline-oriented. Align the region and target fish before considering travel.

Hood Canal salmon outing. Use the guide directory to identify trips with a Hood Canal focus, then separately review access and current regulations. The October build-up should not be mistaken for a promise of peak action.

River steelhead outing. Browse Washington guides for river-based steelhead trips, distinguishing summer-run fall fish from the Olympic Peninsula winter-run period. Conditions and rules take priority over the calendar label.

Ask your guide for their WDFW guide license number before you book.

FAQ

Is October a good month for coho? It can be an important fall period in marine areas. Coho often gather near stream mouths and move with increased river flows. Always confirm the rules for the location being considered.

Does Hood Canal chum fishing peak in October? October is usually the lead-in. The historical center of the Hood Canal chum pattern is November, though that is only a best-time description.

Can someone fish for squid without a boat? Lit public piers are a common starting point for squid jigging. Confirm access and the current WDFW licensing and fishing information before going.

Is Olympic Peninsula winter steelhead an October fishery? Its usual winter-run period is December through March. October discussions more commonly concern summer-run fish holding into fall; WDFW remains the source for current rules.
