Columbia and Snake River Walleye Fishing: Timing, Tactics and Guides

Seasonal patterns, bottom tactics and guided boat trips for walleye.

Overview

Columbia River walleye fishing has a dedicated following, and the nearby Snake River is part of the same regional conversation. Walleye can be challenging to catch, which is part of their appeal, and they are also valued as eating fish. A useful plan begins with how these fish relate to the bottom, the water being considered and the time of year.

Species and seasons

Species Best months Notes
Walleye Typically March and May, before and after the April spawn; summer and fall The spawn can be harder; winter is tougher but can still be fair.
Smallmouth bass Bite tends to improve in September and October Shares habitat with walleye.

Walleye fishing often peaks on either side of the April spawn rather than during the spawn itself. Summer can be excellent, with a lull in the heat. Cooling fall water brings another improvement, while winter tends to require more patience and attention to deeper water. These are relative seasonal patterns, not guarantees about an individual trip. See walleye.

Smallmouth bass share some of the habitat, with their bite tending to improve in September and October. That is useful context when describing the water, even on a trip focused specifically on walleye.

Methods

Boat trolling and jigging are the core methods for this overview. Presentations associated with the fishery include worm harnesses behind bottom walkers, deep-diving plugs, blade baits and plastics on jig heads. The common thread is attention to the bottom and a slower presentation rather than treating walleye like fish found anywhere in the water column.

Trolling and jigging organize the day differently. Trolling lets an angler present a lure while the boat moves; jigging is a more direct way to work a lure in the chosen water. Neither method by itself establishes what is suitable on a particular day. Ask which method a guided boat trip emphasizes and how it aligns with the area being fished.

In winter, the seasonal guidance becomes simpler still: look deeper and fish slowly, close to the bottom. In fall, improving conditions as water cools help explain why walleye attracts additional interest. Tactics are part of trip planning, not a promise of a catch.

Regions and access

WDFW names several popular waters relevant to Columbia and Snake walleye research. Wallula Junction is one reference point. The Snake River below Ice Harbor Dam is another. On the Columbia, the stretch from Boardman upstream to McNary Dam is also specifically identified.

Those names should help narrow a search, not be collapsed into one location. An angler asking about “Columbia walleye” may be considering a different stretch from someone asking about the Snake. Guided trips here are boat-oriented, so compare the waters a listing covers before deciding that it matches an intended outing. This page does not specify launches or current water conditions.

Check the rules before you go

Seasons, limits and closures change every year and by emergency rule. Check current WDFW rules at https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations and emergency rules/closures at https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/emergency-rules before you go. Use the exact stretch of the Columbia or Snake and the intended species when reviewing current information.

FAQ

When does Columbia River walleye fishing typically improve? Fishing can strengthen in March and May, before and after the April spawn, through much of summer and again as fall water cools. A summer heat lull and a tougher winter are also part of the pattern.

Is Snake River walleye covered here? Yes. The Snake River below Ice Harbor Dam is one of the specifically named waters. Compare individual guide listings for the exact river stretch they cover.

What methods are associated with walleye trips? Boat trolling and jigging, including bottom-focused presentations using worm harnesses, plugs, blade baits or jig-head plastics. Check current WDFW information before planning methods for a specific water.

Can walleye be pursued in winter? Winter fishing is generally tougher but can still be fair. Deeper, slower presentations near the bottom are the basic seasonal guidance, not a forecast for any particular outing.

Are smallmouth bass relevant to a walleye trip? They share some habitat, and their bite tends to improve in early fall. Walleye remains the focus of this page, but the overlap is useful when discussing the region.
